Dallas Water Utilities • Long Range Water Supply Plan Update (2024), TX
Working as a sub-consultant to HDR, Inc., from 2023-2024 MWM performed population and water demand modeling for the Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) Long Range Water Supply Plan. The DWU retail service area currently serves more than 1.3 million people, requiring robust long-term planning to support future water supply needs. MWM developed a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based population forecasting methodology that integrated multiple datasets to produce decadal population projections through 2080 for the DWU retail service area.
To support scenario evaluation and planning discussions, MWM also developed a dynamic Excel-based tool capable of rapidly generating population estimates by adjusting population pressure rates and other key modeling parameters. Based on input received from DWU and HDR during workshops and stakeholder meetings, MWM refined model assumptions and developed final population projections for the retail service area. These projections were then combined with wholesale population estimates developed by the Texas Water Development Board and its consultants to produce comprehensive estimates of the current and future population served by DWU.
