California Water Efficiency Partnership (CalWEP) • Non-Functional Turf Technical Assistance (2025), CA

MWM collaborated with the California Water Efficiency Partnership (CalWEP) and IN Communications to develop educational and outreach materials supporting Assembly Bill (AB) 1572 implementation and compliance. The project included development of clear, accessible resources explaining the legislation, including definitions of functional and non-functional turf and sector-specific fact sheets describing potential impacts on commercial and institutional landscapes.

The project team also developed simplified guidance materials to help homeowners associations understand compliance responsibilities, incorporating case studies of successful landscape transformations as well as best management practices for tree care and sustainable landscaping. Additionally, the project team created user-friendly resources to help agencies and property owners identify and apply for grant funding to support turf conversion projects. The project also included a quick-reference guide outlining turf alternatives, drought-tolerant plant options, and tree selections suitable for desert friendly landscapes.
